2016 Children Want Peace

Children Want Peace

Festival will include three children’s events this year. These events will include performances by children that take part in Day-Mer and North London Community House (NLCH) culture and arts activities, workshops and competitions.

NLCH drama club performances will take place on 11 June and the children that take part in music lessons in NLCH will showcase their talents on 17 June.

This year, the Family Fun Day will be held at Holmleigh Primary School in Stamford Hill on 19 June. The Celebration will host a number of activities; while watching children’s folk dancing and competitions, arts and crafts created by tiny fingers can also be seen.

Numbers of migrants arriving in Europe are swelling, especially due to the conflicts in the Middle East. Primarily Syrian migrants are subjected to inhumane conditions at the doors of Europe. Baby Aylan, drowned in the waters of the Mediterranean, has been a stark reminder of the human suffering caused by the war.

European governments, while trying to figure out how to stem the flow of migrants, are using terrorist attacks as an excuse to justify their policies and statements that incite racism. Racist tendencies are rising all over Europe, fed by the political climate created by these policies, threatening the unity of migrant workers.

In England, education reforms implemented by the Conservative government are opening all schools up to privatisation in the name of academisation; teachers’ pay and conditions and pensions are under attack; and educational standards are eroded. Measures limiting university tuition fees, recently increased to £9000, are removed and left to the mercy of universities. These attacks will limit our children’s dreams of going to university and they are condemned to a lifetime of debt.

We welcome all children, adults, youth and the elderly to our festival events which are our opportunity to organise the fight against educational reforms, social cuts, wars and racism. Our children’s events are dedicated to baby Aylan and all Syrian refugee children, in the name of all children in the world trying to escape war, destruction and death.
